36 明夷 Darkening of the Light
Judgement
The light has hidden beneath the earth: this is a dark time. It helps to recognize how hard your position is and to stay firm and upright. This is not the time to shine or to confront openly what is greater than you. It is the time to protect your light. Keep your judgment, do not put it out, and do not show it where it cannot do you good. Ask yourself what you keep tending inside, even if nobody sees it.
Image
The sun goes beneath the earth and the light is covered. The wise person manages people by showing their intelligence precisely through keeping it veiled. This is not hypocrisy: it is prudence before those who could not bear so much clarity. Knowing how to keep quiet about what you know is a kind of intelligence. Ask yourself where it helps to stop shining for a while, and what you gain by being more discreet.
Lines
Line 1
You fly with drooping wings. The wise person, once decided to leave, may go three days without eating, and wherever they go people may speak in mockery. This is the image of someone who leaves in a dark time, even when it costs. Ask yourself what you are willing to lose in order not to betray yourself.
Line 2
You are wounded in the left thigh, but you save yourself with the strength of a good horse, and it works in your favor. The wound does not stop you from acting if you have the means to escape. Use what you have, quickly. Ask yourself what simple but useful resource of yours could get you out before things worsen.
Line 3
You hunt in the south and capture the great leader of the darkness. But you should not try to correct everything at once: what is great is not mended in one go. Do not demand a total cleanup. Ask yourself what deep change you want to make all at once, and what would happen if you did it in stages.
Line 4
You have just entered the belly of the dark earth, but can still follow your purpose: you leave through the gate and courtyard of the lord of darkness. This is the moment to see the heart of what oppresses you and understand it is not your place. Ask yourself what you have understood that lets you leave.
Line 5
Count Ji did what this time asks. It helps to stay firm and upright. This is someone who, under oppression, does not lose what is essential: guarded outside, kept whole inside. Ask yourself how you can keep your light without provoking whoever is in charge.
Line 6
There is no light, only darkness. You had risen to the sky, and now your fate is to descend to the earth. It is the fall after being high. It may be painful, but it also brings you back to basics. Ask yourself what you could learn from a fall, and whether something can only be seen from below.
